An effort is made to justify Longuet-Higgins' (1964) analysis of planetary waves on a rotating sphere using a rigorous asymptotic analysis of the full equations, taking into account the temperature variation with altitude. This analysis is possible with the aid of the asymptotic Boussinesq approximation. The existence of wave reflection levels with respect to altitude (turning points or critical levels) is demonstrated as well as the existence of azimuthal reflection levels. As a consequence, planetary waves trapped in specific equatorial zones and limited with respect to altitude can exist.
