The solar dynamo is studied as a conceptual jigsaw-puzzle, consisting of several pieces, that may each be studied in detail: Kinematic ABC flow dynamos, the dynamics of buoyant and twisted magnetic flux ropes and the ability of over-turning convection to keep a magnetic field near the bottom of a convection zone. Theses pieces are all studied using numerical 3-D MHD simulations.
