We present results of a detailed comparison of Cluster data (taken from the fluxgate magnetometers onboard each of the spacecraft) with currently available magnetic field models. The recently extended Cluster mission provides an excellent opportunity for long-term study of the external contributions to the magnetic field in the near-Earth environment. As part of the GEOSPACE consortium we intend to use the Cluster data to improve our understanding and modelling of the effect of magnetospheric magnetic fields. This will complement studies of magnetic data from low-Earth orbiting satellites such as Ørsted, CHAMP and the proposed SWARM mission. We test each model against the data in the different regions accessed by Cluster and consider the effect on low altitude fields.
