Ring Currents Buildups by Directly Driven Injections and Unloading Injections Directly driven (DD) injections are driven by steady magnetosphere convections controlled by the solar wind E-field. Unloading (UL) injections are powered by the NENL formed at substorm expansion phase onset to drive substorm energized plasmas deeper into the inner magnetosphere. On the basis of these working definitions of terms, ring currents in storm main phase under southward IMF are intensified by the DD injections before and after each substorm expansion phase. During the substorm expansion phase, ring currents are intensified by the UL injections integrated into the DD injections. DD injections are one of the DD activities that include enhanced steady magnetospheric convections, brightening of auroral arcs, enhanced eastward/westward electrojets of Hall currents in the evening/morning sectors, initial enhancement of the westward electrojet of Cowling currents in the midnight sector, initial disruption of tail current due to closure of the enhanced westward Cowling currents, dipolaization earthward and NENL formation tailward of the initial current disruption region. UL injections are one of UL activities during the expansion phase that include tailward expansion of the ongoing dipolarizing region driven by NENL, poleward expansion of auroral bulge, intensifications of the westward electrojet of Cowling currents in the midnight sector, UL injections of substorm energized plasmas including O+ ions driven by NENL deep into the inner magnetosphere. The cause-and-effect chain of processes leading to the DD and UL activities are discussed in a series of four inter-related papers posted at http://www.faculty.uaf.edu/ffjrk/onset2.htm.
