A workshop sponsored by NASA was held at NIST July 18-20, 2005, on the current status of uncertainties in the Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). The stated purpose of the TSI Workshop was to work towards an understanding, through measurement-based approaches, the 5 Watts per meter squared absolute scale difference between TSI measurements made by the on-orbit TSI instruments. Representatives participated from ERBE, ACRIM I, II, and III, VIRGO DIARAD and VIRGO PMO, and SORCE TIM. The agenda of the third day was an assessment of possible laboratory-based comparison measurements based on current measurement capabilities, and consisted of presentations on aperture area intercomparisons, diffraction corrections, and system level TSI scale comparisons against primary radiometric scales as established by national standards laboratories. Of particular interest was the degree to which laboratory measurements could help determine the source of the TSI scale differences. This presentation will review the status of this area, based on the discussions and recommendations of Day 3 of the TSI workshop.
