Permissible values of the vertical gradient of the sunspot magnetic field are estimated under the similarity assumption. An expression for the upper limit of the vertical sunspot magnetic field gradient is obtained from considerations of the magnetohydrostatic equation and the gas pressure distribution for the case of a circular single spot with an untwisted magnetic field whose horizontal flux distribution is assumed to be Gaussian. It is shown that the models constructed by Yun (1972) result in a pressure maximum in the center of the sunspot when the vertical magnetic field gradient is equal to 1 G/km, in contrast to the previously stated condition that the pressure minimum occur in the sunspot center. Calculations also show that the maximum value of the vertical gradient of the sunspot magnetic field decreases with increasing sunspot size. Finally, it is shown that the similarity assumption leads to a restriction of the angle of lines of force at the outer boundary of the penumbra, thus limiting the application of similarity models to the actual sunspots.
