The preflare conditions, changes, and events are categorized into distinct (which have direct physical connections with flares), evolutionary, and statistical. Evolutionary changes are long-term effects that may be related to the flare buildup even though these changes may occur in the absence of flares, such as the development of current sheets or strongly sheared magnetic fields, evolving magnetic features, sunspot motions, or the velocity patterns. Statistical preflare changes include distinct and evolutionary preflare changes; these events include statistically significant magnetic field properties, the brightness of active centers at various wavelengths, and increased turbulence in filaments.
