The P-T conditions and the density (and velocity) change associated with the reaction from an alumina-rich pyroxene to an alumina-poor pyroxene plus garnet, or the lower-pressure boundary for the two-phase region of the pyroxene-garnet transition, is thoroughly examined. The 200-km seismic discontinuity has not been satisfactorily explained previously, and it is proposed here that it may be related to the above phase transformation.
