A comparison between the areas of solar polar coronal holes and N-S cosmic ray asymmetries measured by polar region neutron monitors showed that the N-S asymmetries during 1973-74 were related to asymmetries in the dimensions of solar polar holes. The hemisphere with the smaller hole has a larger cosmic ray flux; the N-S asymmetry is small in the presence of a symmetric coronal region about the solar equator. Various mechanisms relating to a N-S asymmetry are discussed.
