Tracing of rays in the Z-mode is important in the study of certain magnetospheric phenomena and this entails raytracing in a medium which is not plane stratified. The use of refractive index diagrams as an aid to the interpretation of ray paths in media which are not plane stratified is discussed. An extension of raytracing techniques to deal with the propagation of radio waves through mode conversion windows such as the Ellis window is described. The characteristic features and ultimate destination of rays in the Z-mode are summarized, and examples are given of some calculated ray paths.
