Direct and indirect data on solar activity during 1645-1715 are examined, and models of the Maunder minimum are discussed. Different physical processes lying at the base of the solar cycle are considered, including differential rotation and turbulent convection of solar matter; it is shown that only dynamo processes can explain observational data on high and low solar activity. It is found that time variations of C-14 content in the earth's atmosphere on scales of hundreds of years are primarily determined by solar activity; i.e., recorded variations of C-14 activity reflect variations of past solar activity
