Basic physical reasons for the importance of UV astronomy are discussed. Attention is given to UV observations of interstellar and intergalactic media, the future uses of high resolution spectrometers in the far UV, and atomic data required for proper interpretation. It is noted that satellite UV observations have the potential of treating fundamental problems concerning the nature of gaseous matter in the outer regions of the Galaxy, in neighboring galaxies, and in the intergalactic matter seen in quasar absorption spectra.
