Newly developed space instrumentation has made it possible to explore the ultraviolet spectrum of the sun with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution. Improvements of VUV observation capability are discussed with reference to the plane-parallel global model of the solar atmosphere and refinements that introduce horizontal inhomogeneities. It is suggested that the global existence of a hot corona and the outstreaming solar wind may be caused by high-energy events occurring in the quiet sun. These events are extremely localized and cover only a small fraction of the solar disk.
