The use of HIPPARCOS to estimate of systemic tangential motions of the Magellanic Clouds (MC) is discussed. In the most favorable case, it is possible to detect motions of 250 to 300 km/sec on the basis of a 2.5 yr mission. If obtained, these data would allow to correct the rotation of the LMC for its transverse motion, to assess possible two-body structure of the SMC, and to investigate the nature of the inter-Clouds bridge and the reality of a connection between the LMC and the Galaxy.
