As a result of examination of all HD and DM stars located in the field of open clusters proposed for observation with the HIPPARCOS satellite, it is shown that the proportion of cluster stars really observable is only 36%. Therefore, a severe selection has to be made, and the criteria adopted are described. Statistics on the number of requested and of retained stars per cluster are also presented. Fainter stars are not included in the analysis.
