Hawking studied the behavior of quantum fields in the space-time corresponding to a gravitationally collapsing object, and predicted on that basis that black holes emit radiation. I revisit this question, taking into account the quantum uncertainty in the location of the limb of the collapsing object. This appears to substantially modify the picture.
