Recent developments in the study of interplanetary shock waves, particularly as regards fluid effects due to solar flare-generated shock waves, are reviewed. Shock and piston configurations, the kinematics of flare-generated shock waves deduced from synoptic interdisciplinary observations, shock propagation into an inhomogeneous ambient solar wind, theoretical studies of multiple shock ensembles in a homogeneous ambient solar wind, and case studies of several interplanetary shock waves and multiple shock ensembles are described. The necessity for continuing theoretical studies in the interplanetary shock wave field is emphasized.
