Various properties of pulsating stars and a number of the theories that have arisen to explain those properties are described. The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, which plots luminosity vs effective temperature and color, light curves of several variable curves, and the phase shift method of determining the rate of change of a star's pulsation period are explained. The harmonic mode nature of the pulsation of stars is pointed out, and the theory of ionization zones as the driving force behind pulsation is discussed. The second ionization zone of helium is essential to the capability of a star to pulsate, and thus the abundance of helium may be determined from a star's pulsation properties. The relation between period and luminosity is also outlined.
