United States solar astronomy activities are surveyed. Agency program objectives and mission requirements, activities in support of the program, and money and manpower expenditures are included. The scope of solar astrophysics is defined, and the present state of knowledge is outlined. Federally supported solar research is described in detail, by major institution and by program category. A coordinated national program of solar astrophysics is discussed in terms of objectives and resources and the particular importance of the Sacramento Peak Observatory and the Solar Maximum Mission to this national program.
