A mechanism is proposed according to which the highly structured auroral arc is caused by a current-driven laminar electrostatic shock oblique to the geomagnetic field so that electrons are accelerated by the potential jump associated with the shock. The shock is assumed to be confined to a plane and is supported by a current flow with the energy coming from the voltage and current supplied by an external source. The oblique shock model is discussed along with laminar shock models. The small amplitude instabilities associated with the shock solutions are identified and the necessary conditions for wave growth are set forth. The proposed theory is discussed in the context of the magnetosphere.
