Equations are derived for the distribution function of absorbed energy in an ionization calorimeter used to detect fast electrons or photons. Asymptotic relationships are established between fluctuations in absorbed energy and fluctuations in the number of particles in an approximation of the B cascade theory. Losses in a thin layer of material are considered, and it is shown that they will be proportional to the number of electrons in a particular shower. A relationship is derived for calculating the total energy lost in an infinitely thick layer from the inception of a shower down to a certain depth in the layer.
