A comparative study of the day-to-day changes of equatorial electrojet parameters and interplanetary plasma parameters indicates that the normal noon-time electrojet weakens and the counter-electrojet intensifies when the positive IMF component B sub x (towards sun), the negative component B sub z (southward) and plasma density N increase and the inverse tan (B sub y/B sub x) becomes perpendicular to the garden-hose direction, even on quiet days (Ap = 0.7). It is suggested that interplanetary plasma leaks into the magnetosphere through the geomagnetic tail for selected orientations of the interplanetary field and causes ionospheric currents in the polar/auroral regions which may extend up to the equator.
