The shape of the Alfven surface separating a neutron-star magnetosphere from the accreting-plasma flow is calculated along with the velocity and scattering optical depth of the gas layer flowing across the Alfven surface. The computations are performed for both spherically symmetric gas infall and disk accretion. It is shown that matter infall from the Alfven radius to the neutron-star surface is possible only if the plasma is frozen into the star's magnetic field.
