Suitably modified explosive shaped charges have been used to produce small hypervelocity projectiles (v ~ 15 km s-1) to study e.m. effects associated with high-velocity cratering of basalts, thus simulating in a terrestrial environment some features of meteoritic impact on the lunar surface. The experiments have shown that plasma is formed during impact and that an external field can be impressed in the basalt.
