Recurrent and sporadic Forbush decreases (FD) are investigated using the data of the 1971-1981 period, obtained by a world-wide network of stations. The data are based on 179 FD events with amplitudes of at least 1.5 percent, observed from high and middle latitudes. In the mean, the spectrum exponent for the recurrent FDs (-0.44 + or - 0.42) is found to be greater than that for the sporadic FDs (-0.87 + or - 0.20). It is concluded that the sporadic FDs result from cosmic-ray interaction with separate fluxes of localized formations in the solar wind, whereas the recurrent FDs result from the quasi-stationary enhanced fluxes of the solar wind with extended dimensions in interplanetary space.
