Scientific paper

The paper reviews lower thermosphere dynamics as determined by optical measurements of aeronomic emissions. Photometric and spectrometric investigations of natural or man-made emissions below 500 km are applied to the study of wind, tides, gravity waves, and turbulence, and measurements of aeronomic emissions are used to determine the density of excited particles and to estimate the characteristics of photochemical reactions. Direct and indirect techniques for studying wind in the thermosphere are examined.
