Electrojet irregularities are divided into two distinct types: Type I, related to the two stream instability, in which a roughly constant Doppler shift corresponds to ion acoustic velocity; and Type II, related to the cross field instability, in which a Doppler shift is a function of the electron drift velocity. HF measurements of 5, 7, and 10 meter wavelengths of plasma instabilities were made in Ethiopia near the dip equator and compared with theoretical predictions. For Type I irregularities, gradient length is found to be much lower than the electron profiles predicted by the physical equations. For the Type II variety, large scale irregularities appear sooner and disappear later than smaller irregularities, as a result of changes in the horizontal component of the magnetic field.
