At the stratopause, when opacity effects are included, the photochemical acceleration of the thermal relaxation rate is substantially reduced and large vertical scale temperature disturbances relax at approximately the Newtonian cooling rate. Large vertical scale ozone density and temperature perturbations may grow in amplitude due to opacity changes in the O3 dissociation and heating rates.
