A procedure for calculating the maximum height of the nighttime F2 layer at midlatitudes is described and found to be in general agreement with an experimental determination. An equation is presented which relates the maximum height to parameters of the neutral atmosphere at several heights and of the vertical drift velocity. Although one of the parameters was determined from observational data, it is thought that this parameter can be calculated from a system of equations for thermospheric winds. Parameter values for local time hours 21 through 5 of March 23, 1970 are reported.
