The state of knowledge regarding solar variability is discussed, noting that the establishment of a causal relationship in solar-terrestrial relationships would allow the use of geophysical research to define past solar activity. The solar constant and the solar neutrino flux are being monitored to improve the understanding of solar physics; solar radial adiabatic pulsations are considered for gamma- and kappa-mechanisms causing the 160 min pulsation period. Other oscillations that have been observed are the p-mode (standing acoustic waves) and the f-mode (surface waves) which traverse the total sun surface, have many eigenfrequencies, and occur with periods of five min. No other periodicities have been empirically proven to exist.
