It is pointed out that the dynamo within the earth's core operates by converting potential energy into magnetic energy. An attempt is made to establish a physical connection between the dipole moment and core power sources. The considered model is based on two fundamental hypotheses. It is assumed that the magnetic field is generated by small scale, rotation dominated turbulence consisting of propagating inertial waves. Any effects produced by large scale shear flows are ignored at this stage. Secondly, it is supposed that the turbulence is supported by a flux of buoyancy, either thermal or compositional, originating at one surface of the outer core. Aspects of helicity are considered along with inertial waves, the effect of Lorentz forces, the energy balance, and the history of the dipole moment. Estimates are obtained regarding the power requirements for turbulent dynamos driven by four different energy sources.
