Two categories of normal galaxy investigation are being conducted with the Einstein X-ray Observatory: (1) detailed studies of nearby galaxies, where individual sources can be detected, and perhaps correlated with galactic morphology; and (2) shorter observations of more distant objects to determine the total luminosity distribution of normal galaxies. It is shown that while X-ray observations provide a useful description of the galactic cluster media, which affects the evolution of galaxies in that environment, the usefulness of X-ray data in normal galaxy studies as distinct from the study of X-ray sources themselves remains to be established. The studies covered include those of M31 and the Large Magellanic Cloud.
