The ISEE-3 spacecraft has discovered a recognizable tail of the earth's magnetosphere which extends a million km beyond the moon's orbit. In the plasma sheet of the distant tail, plasma was found to be moving tailward as fast as 1000 km/sec, which is much faster than the speeds of a few tens of km/sec detected near the earth. Attention is given to the process of magnetic reconnection, by which the high tailward plasma sheet flows are driven, as well as to the 'dripping faucet' tail model, according to which the blowing of the solar wind can draw out, and then pitch off, the plasma sheet of the inner magnetosphere to form a plasmoid.
