Radio observations of Comets C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) and C/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang) in the ammonia inversion lines were performed during their respective close approaches to Earth. None of the four lowest energy metastable lines (J,K=J, J=1,4), could be detected in Comet LINEAR, for which we derive a significant upper bound on the production rate of Q(NH3) < 1.4×1026s-1. There are indications of a marginal detection (~2σ) in Comet Ikeya-Zhang. The maximum possible integrated intensity of the four observed lines converts to an upper limit on the ammonia production rate of Q(NH3) < 3.4×1026s-1. These results imply remarkably low ammonia-to-water ratios of roughly 0.2-0.3% in both comets.
