Comets: Spectrophotometry

Scientific paper

We obtained long-slit spectrograms of P/Borrelly on the nights of July 26, September 16, and September 17 2001 UT with the facility low-resolution CCD spectrometer at the Palomar 200-inch telescope. We also obtained spectra of C/2001 A2 and P/2001 Q2 during these runs and we derived production rates for H2O, CN, C2 and NH2 for all three comets. For P/Borrelly, we derived a peak water production rate Q(H2O) ~ 1.e28 molecules per second, significantly lower than obtained in the 1994 apparition. Normalised to water, our production rate ratios confirm that P/Borrelly belongs to the C2 depleted class of comets while both C/2001 A2 and P/2001 Q2 have "Normal" or Halley-type C2/H2O ratios.
