We present observations of comet C/LINEAR (2000 WM1) obtained during three consecutive nights, starting on December 1, 2001. The focal reducer of the Max-Planck Institute for Aeronomy was used at the 2-m telescope of the Pik Terskol Observatory. Narrow-band images of the dust continuum were acquired in three spectral windows, free from cometary emissions, centered at 526, 713, and 853 nm, respectively. The images were calibrated to absolute intensities and used to construct color maps of the dust continuum. The dust coma of comet C/LINEAR (2000 WM1) exhibits a mean reddening of about 15%/1000Å. The spatial distribution of this reddening is different in the different spectral ranges. It is almost homogeneous in the range 526 - 713 nm. In contrast, a decrease of the reddening is observed in the range 713 - 853 nm with decreasing distance to the nucleus. We consider the observed features as a consequence of the combined influence of the size dependent light scattering properties of the dust particles, their motion under the influence of the solar radiation, and of the variations of the particles size distribution function in the relevant spectral range.
