A high Mach Number shock wave in partially neutral astrophysical gas can produce a population of neutral hydrogen atoms whose bulk speed and thermal velocity distribution match those of the ions. This population only exists very close to the shock, and it provides unique diagnostics for the physics of collisionless shocks, in particular electron-ion and ion-ion thermal equilibration. Fast neutrals that escape upstream may also pre-heat the gas, modifying the shock itself.
