The low silica content of natural waters can be ascribed to inorganic precipitation of silica or to fixation and sedimentation of silica by organisms. In recent publications on the solubility of silica inorganic precipitation of silica is considered unlikely. Results of experiments show, however, that X-ray amorphous hydroxides of aluminium, iron, manganese or magnesium can be used to remove silica quantitatively from very diluted, undersaturated solutions (3 mg SiO 2 / litre H 2 O ). Hydroxide-silicate precipitates are formed which contain up to 80% SiO 2 (calculated H 2 O-free). The adsorbed quantities of silica depend on temperature (at low temperatures the content of SiO 2 in hydroxides is higher), on concentration of Al / Si in the solution and on the physical condition of crystallisation (amorphous hydroxides adsorb more than crystalline ones). The concentrations selected for the experiments (0.3 mg Al 2 O 3 / litre H 2 O and 3 mg SiO 2 / litre H 2 O ) indicate that inorganic precipitates of silica can be of very considerable importance under natural conditions. There is no significant difference in the SiO 2 content of precipitates from freshwater and from seawater. Diagenesis can lead to the formation of various clay minerals and finegrained quartz from the X-ray amorphous hydroxide-silica precipitates. For the content of SiO 2 in water the adsorption of silica by hydroxides is decisive.
