A new topological invariant of closed connected orientable four-dimensional
manifolds is proposed. The invariant, constructed via surgery on a special
link, is a four-dimensional counterpart of the celebrated SU(2) three-manifold
invariant of Reshetikhin, Turaev and Witten.
