We present a simple and efficient scheme to reduce the entropy in Mott-insulating states and the infidelity of register states for quantum computing caused by atom number fluctuations in optical lattices. Our scheme uses the interaction energy difference for atoms in different vibrational states to remove excess atomic occupation and merging of wells to enhance the ground state population. Preparation of large regions with precisely one atom per lattice site is discussed for both bosons and fermions.
