The crossing from a static quark-antiquark system to a system of two
static-light mesons when the separation of the static quarks is increased is
calculated in zero-temperature lattice QCD. The mixing of these two states is
extracted from the lattice operators. We also discuss the breaking of an
excited string of a hybrid meson.
