We describe a quantum process tomography procedure that allows for experimental detection of the initial correlations between the system and the environment. We motivate the studies of systems that are initially correlated with their environment followed by the derivation of the quantum process tomography procedure. The process tomography method described here forms the basis for an important experimental tool to study the non-Markovian memory of a system along with dynamical control and system-environment correlations. Additionally, the process-map yielding from this procedure is shown to be trace and Hermiticity preserving and completely positive, which is not the case for the maps coming from the standard quantum process tomography procedures when initial correlations are present. Finally, we end with a simple but illustrative example.
