A unified theory of line formation in a magnetic field is developed from first principles within a classical framework. Starting from Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic field in vacuum and the Hamiltonian for an electron in a central potential, the theory of radiative transfer in a magnetic field is developed, including magneto-optical effects, scattering, coherence effects (the Hanle effect), and partial redistribution.
