The Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite has made what are probably the first polarimetric observations in the ultraviolet spectrum of the sun and stars. In this paper, a brief review is first given of various such UVSP polarimetric observations and analyses. The reduction and analysis of UVSP magnetograms of the transition region above a sunspot obtained in March 1985 are then described. Maximum values of the magnetic field of over 1200 gauss were obtained. Finally, comments and suggestions relevant to possible future ultraviolet polarimetery are discussed.
