Expressions are derived that describe the time evolution of field-aligned (or Birkeland) currents in collisionless magnetized regions such as the magnetosphere and the solar wind. It is shown that, in a collisionless plasma, two important categories of field-aligned currents exist: Alfvenic and interchange. The Alfvenic field-aligned currents are driven by perpendicular inertial currents, while the interchange field-aligned currents are driven by pressure gradients.
