The energetics of homogeneous intracrystalline (order-disorder) equilibria of amphiboles and pyroxenes are discussed in a quantitative manner. The distributions of Mg and Fe 2+ among the lattice sites of cummingtonite and orthopyroxene are derived from the functions of the heterogeneous ion exchange equilibria for co-existing cummingtonite-actinolite and Ca-pyroxene-orthopyroxene. The derived distribution in cummingtonite is in good agreement with that obtained by X-ray diffraction by . The distribution in other pyroxenes is also considered. The general problem of the distribution of elements is discussed in relation to various types of intracrystalline equilibria, coupling effects between different types of ions and types of polyhedra of co-ordination with the cations.
