The IGY, with strong emphasizes on ionosphere and space-related studies in the polar regions and with the launchings of the first artificial satellites, became the originating stimulus for the last fifty years of incredible advances in understanding of the Earth's environment in space. The recently completed Decadal Survey of Solar and Space Physics (under the auspices of the Committee for Solar and Space Physics of the National Research Council's Space Studies Board) provides a framework for new advances in scientific understanding and in applications of this understanding for societal benefit. This talk describes the results of the Decadal Survey and presents its major recommendations for new initiatives and for infrastructure additions and changes that will enable the achievement of the promising science and applications opportunities that are foreseen.
