The angular momentum or "spin" of a black hole sets an innermost stable circular orbit for accreting gas. The inner radius of an accretion disk, then, can provide an indirect measure of the black hole spin parameter. Across the mass scale, X-ray observations of black holes incisively reveal the innermost accretion disk. As with dark energy, where independent techniques fortuitously serve as checks on evidence of cosmic acceleration, X-ray observations of black holes provide several independent means of estimating black hole spin parameters. This talk will review techniques for constraining black hole spin in stellar-mass and super-massive black holes using X-ray observations, recent observational progress, and prospects for the future.
