In 2008, Cassini RPWS observed Z-mode narrowband emissions near 5 kHz during the periapsis portion of the high inclination orbits. On many occasions, the Z-mode narrowband emission was interrupted by a bite-out, an abrupt disappearance followed by a sudden reappearance of the emission. Originally, these bite-outs were thought to be caused by occultation of the source by the planet. Close examination of the Langmuir probe proxy density data revealed density enhancements during the time of the bite-outs. CAPS ELS data show that cold electrons are associated with the density enhancements. Observation statistics show that the enhancements mostly occur around midnight local time, at a medium latitude (30-40 degrees) and an L-shell range of 4-8, which indicates that the L-shells adjacent to Enceladus are populated with dense plasma that can extend to higher latitudes. These density enhancements are important in mapping the inner magnetosphere density profile and provide an important clue to the source of the 5 kHz Saturn narrowband emissions.
