A two-dimensional model for the formation of the nighttime ionosphere of Venus is verified for the case of low solar activity using radio-occultation data from Venera 9 and 10 as well as from Venera 15 and 16. The model takes into account two probable sources of ionosphere formation: ionization by superthermal electrons and horizontal transport of ions from the daytime sector.
